CHARGING SCHOOL MEALS AND PROHIBITION AGAINST SHAMING
The Lynbrook School District believes that one of the most important ways we can help our children perform better in their classrooms is to provide them with the nutrition necessary for the healthy growth of their minds and bodies. We invite students to participate in the food service program. New York State’s Universal Free School Meals program begins this school year, providing meals at no cost to students. See the District’s website for more information. If the Universal Free School Meals program ends, students may buy breakfast for $3.00 and lunch for $4.25 each day. Children from households that meet federal income guidelines are eligible for free meals or reduced-price meals regardless of whether the Universal Free School Meals program continues.

If the Universal Free School Meals program mentioned above ends, the Board of Education recognizes that, on occasion, students may forget to bring meal money to school. To ensure that students do not go hungry, but also to promote responsible student behavior and minimize the fiscal burden to the district, the Board will allow students who may forget meal money to “charge” the cost of meals to be paid back at a later date. For details about this policy, please visit the Board of Education Policies Page at www.lynbrookschools.org.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BREAKFAST AND LUNCH PROGRAM

Food Service Start of Year Doc 2025-26

We wanted to acknowledge that we are aware of some challenges with our elementary meal service to start the year, particularly with our new breakfast program. We have been working closely with our Food Service Director and our elementary principals to try and address these challenges.

One of the changes we put in place is eliminating the need to pre-order breakfast at Marion StreetWest End, and Waverly Park. Students will be able to choose their own breakfast entrée, in the cafeteria, from a more limited entrée list. Parents and guardians of students at the Kindergarten Center will still need to pre-order breakfast. Since our elementary schools do not have full kitchens, meals are prepared at our middle and high schools and then delivered to the elementary schools. Breakfast for the Kindergarten Center is delivered the day before it will be served, so KC breakfast orders must be placed by 10pm two school days in advance.

Lunches must still be pre-ordered at all elementary buildings. However, lunch orders for the week ahead can now be placed up until Sunday night.

Middle and High School students do not need to pre-order their meals.

For example, if you are pre-ordering your KC student’s breakfast for Monday, you must place your order before 10pm on the previous Thursday. If you are pre-ordering your KC student’s breakfast for Friday, you must place your order before 10pm on the previous Wednesday. The table below can be used as a helpful pre-ordering guide::

We hope to be able to launch the ability to sell a la carte items at the elementary schools this year, such as milk and snacks. A la carte items are not covered by the New York State Universal Free School Meals program and must be paid for. If you have an existing MySchoolBucks account for your student, you may want to consider keeping that account open to allow your student to order a la carte items when those become available for purchase. If your student does not have an existing MySchoolBucks account, you can set one up by going to www.MySchoolBucks.com and creating a new account. You will need your student’s ID number in order to do so.

NEW YORK STATE UNIVERSAL FREE SCHOOL MEALS PROGRAM

New York State’s Universal Free School Meals program begins this school year, providing meals at no cost to students. This program allows all students to receive a single breakfast and a single lunch at no charge. If the Universal Free School Meals program ends, or if a student wants a second meal, students may buy breakfast for $3.00 and lunch for $4.25 each day. Children from households that meet federal income guidelines are eligible for free meals or reduced-price meals regardless of whether the Universal Free School Meals program continues.
