Lynbrook students showcase Flight School, receive recognition at board of education meeting

The Lynbrook School District’s board of education meeting on Feb. 11 was a celebration of students, staff and retirees, as well as an innovative showcase of its enrichment program, Flight School.
Before the meeting, trustees gathered in the Lynbrook High School auditorium to honor students who were selected as All County Artists. Artwork from Lynbrook students, alongside work from schools throughout Nassau County, will be featured at the All County Art Exhibit on March 1 at W. T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Additionally, trustees recognized 30 students who were named AP Scholars. The AP Scholar title is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.
Elementary students showcased the enrichment program Flight School, an immersive, hands-on learning experience that promotes critical thinking, collaboration and creativity. Fifth graders’ first module in the program had them observe the impact on the environment by garbage consumption and disposal. In the first example, students showed how they coded a robot to move across a board to collect debris for disposal. In the second example, students built a model landfill that helped them learn about the various engineered aspects that help them operate safely and effectively. Finally, students utilized the Ozobot, Ari, to follow a code written through an app that mimicked a real-life path followed in 1987 that traveled along the east coast to collect garbage. Following their presentation, students answered questions from the board.
Next, trustees applauded staff member Amy Ezagui, a physics and marine science teacher who was named as an honoree by the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce. Five retirees who served a combined total of 122 years earned recognition. They included Laura D’Achille, Maria Palazzolo, Ellen Restivo, Maria Viviano and Holly Wilson.
