Lynbrook community celebrates America’s 250th anniversary with Freedom Trail event

Lynbrook Schools students, administrators, trustees and community members gathered on May 23 to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary by kicking off the district’s Freedom Trail initiative that features glimpses into American and local Lynbrook history.
Spanning from North Middle School, traveling along Atlantic Avenue and Union Avenue, passing Lynbrook High School and concluding at South Middle School, the Freedom Trail features 50 QR code placards that, when scanned, reveal information about historical moments and locations. Created with the help of Lynbrook Village and the Lynbrook Historical Society, green and gold QR codes showcase Lynbrook’s own rich history, including photos of the first police headquarters and the original Lynbrook Theatre. Residents and visitors can look for the “250” logo stenciled on the sidewalk along the trail to find each QR code. The placards will remain on display through the July 4th weekend.
“When I first presented this project to the village board, I didn’t realize how big of an event it would become,” said Jackson Bowler, a junior who helped organize the event. “This project is an interdisciplinary learning experience, bringing together multiple departments to enrich student learning.”
“This project is about reflecting on 250 years of our country’s history while also thinking about the future we want to create together,” said junior Mikayla Torres.
