Marion Street School marks Augmentative and Alternative Communication Awareness Month

Students at Marion Street Elementary School recently recognized Augmentative and Alternative Communication Awareness Month with a special initiative designed to promote understanding and inclusion of the many ways people communicate.
Students in Catherine O'Brien’s class visited classrooms throughout the building with speech teacher Alanna Loftus to discuss their AAC systems. Using devices that resemble smart tablets, students use a combination of pictures, symbols and words on their devices to communicate their thoughts, share ideas, express their needs and interact with others.
Each visit gave classmates an opportunity to learn firsthand about AAC devices and discover that while some students communicate differently, they share many of the same interests and hobbies. Through thoughtful questions, classmates identified their peers’ favorite foods, shows and activities. The demonstrations helped students gain a greater appreciation for the different ways people express themselves and the importance of making sure everyone feels seen, heard and valued.
