Being a new student in an established classroom can be incredibly daunting, especially if that young person transferred into the district once the year is already underway.

Transfer students often express having difficulty coping with leaving friends behind while being surrounded by new classmates who already know each other. Other students are newcomers and may struggle because they are starting over in a completely new country and culture.

To help make the transition a little bit easier for all new students, North Middle has established a program involving a dedicated group of “Peer Leaders” to show these new youngsters the ropes.

These Peer Leaders are volunteers who go above and beyond to show an interest in helping others feel seen, acknowledged, and welcomed. They may give a new student a building tour, converse with them in their native language or engage them in school activities. Their work continues as they ask the new entrants to join a lunch table or invite them to play at recess. #OwlProud
