Leslie Sattler, a local artist and teacher, is dedicated to combining the worlds of art, recycling and core curriculum to provide students with a hands-on learning experience that leaves a lasting impact. Leslie was invited to South Middle School by art teachers Andrea Schnall and Jennifer Turner to work with eighth grade Studio Art students on a mural project.

By integrating recycled materials into her creative projects, Leslie encourages students to think critically about sustainability while engaging with their artistic abilities. One standout project that exemplifies this approach is the vibrant owl mural, created using repurposed materials and which features the Lynbrook Owl Mascot. While small groups of students worked on the mural, the rest of the class created "re-imagined Owl logos" collaged with recycled cardboard and paper scraps. These are displayed on a banner in the hallway for the students to enjoy.

The mural was a collaborative effort with eighth grade Studio Art students at South Middle School, who worked alongside Leslie to bring the piece to life. Their collective creativity and commitment to using recycled elements in the artwork made the project not only a visual success but also an educational one. Now proudly displayed in the school's lobby, the mural serves as a testament to the power of hands-on learning and environmental consciousness. It will be enjoyed by students, staff and visitors for many years to come, inspiring future generations to think about art, sustainability and the impact of their work.
