In recognition of Holocaust Remembrance Day, middle schoolers throughout the Lynbrook School District viewed the sobering documentary, “The Barn,” a story of one Ukrainian Jew’s survival, on Jan. 22.

Eighth graders at North and South Middle Schools learned of the story of Rachel Kastner’s grandfather, Karl Shapiro, who hid on a Polish farm with 17 other Jews for a year and a half. In “The Barn,” Karl makes his first return to the place he once swore he would never return, showcasing a painful, emotional and enlightening experience for both Karl and Rachel. Although difficult to recount alongside her grandfather, Rachel witnessed the cramped conditions Karl lived through, putting in full perspective the insurmountable odds he overcame as a child.

Lynbrook students empathetically connected with Karl’s journey. Following the conclusion of “The Barn,” Rachel answered students’ thoughtful questions via livestream. The experience emphasized the importance of continuing to share stories like Karl’s across generations.
