South Middle School student Allison Wong recently took home a first-place win from the 2025 IACS Women in Science Challenge!
In Mrs. Gwydir’s 6th grade science class at South, students were presented with an optional Women in Science Challenge through Stony Brook University. The purpose of the challenge was to celebrate the incredible scientific and engineering achievements of women throughout history. Students were given 10 female scientists to study and research. With each scientist, a mini experiment was provided, which students recreated. Each student made a one-minute video highlighting the selected scientist to demonstrate what they learned from completing the famous scientist’s experiment.
This year, Allison Wong, was selected to be one of the 12 finalists to present a speech, as well as her video, to a panel of judges. Allison chose Katherine Johnson as her scientist and her impact on NASA’s space missions. Allison’s hard work and dedication to this project paid off as the judges selected her as the first-place winner for the 2025 IACS Women in Science Challenge. Congratulations to Allison! #OwlProud
